If goods donated for sale, a forced cost is required. We currently use 1 p but would prefer to enter nil.

Where are you entering this cost? It is possible to create a product record with the cost set as 0.
If you wanted to raise a purchase invoice then you would need to set a price on this - but you could use a credit note to zero this cost.
