Change VAT Scheme without removing transactions and doing a dummy VAT Return Merged

Customers who process on the incorrect VAT Scheme have to delete all of their transactions/invoices out, then complete a dummy return off MTD, and then change scheme and have the task of entering everything again. This could be made so much easier to help when a mistake is made.
