I use journals in Sage Accounting for accruals and being able to export the journal to produce a summary of the accruals by Department (or activity, or GL code) helps identify what is the level of accruals by Department. I currently have to print the journal as a PDF, then convert the file using an online app to convert it into an Excel file. I then had to do a bit of fiddling to make it into something that I could use in a pivot table. Cumbersome but it works. The app I use is available from sejda.com. It would save me half an hour a month.
